Technically, a salary is an agreed upon amount of pay that is to be extended at regular intervals, in exchange for the competent performance of specific tasks within the workplace. Here are some of the distinguishing characteristics of the salary that set it apart from other forms of remuneration.

    The Economist has a great story on the replenishment process for the Global Fund that is happening in Berlin. I am a big supporter of treatment, but here is the nub of the issue, which gets back to the notion of an open-ended lifetime entitlement that Western donors are providing for those infected with HIV.

    Asian currencies, with the exception of the Chinese Yuan and Japanese Yen, have notched stellar performances this year.  The currencies of Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, to name but a few, have experienced double-digit increases (in percentage terms) against the Dollar. Worried about the impact of a rising currency on export growth, Asian central banks are in the process of intervening in forex markets.  Singapore, which uses currency manipulation as a form of monetary policy, believed to have already made purchases of US government bonds in order to depress the Singapore Dollar. South Korea, as well, has a history of forex intervention, albeit unsuccessful intervention, and may issue currency stabilization bonds before year-end.  The Gulf Daily News reports:

    .::Information of Chinese Currency::..

    Chinese governmental officials have been somewhat quiet about the Chinese Yuan of late, perhaps not wanting to incite certain American politicians that are trying to lead the passage of a tariff on Chinese imports. In a recent press conference, officials broke the silence by hinting that the Yuan would witness an “accumulated slight revaluation”- meaningless rhetoric which translates roughly into ‘business as usual.’ In other words, barring some unforeseen economic or financial developments, forex traders can probably expect a 2-3% appreciation of the Yuan in 2007.
